What is Gestalt Language Processing (GLP)?

Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) is not a diagnosis, but rather a way of describing how some children learn and develop language differently from the more commonly recognised pathway of language development.

Many children develop language through what is known as Analytic Language Processing (ALP). This typically involves progressing from babbling, to single words, and then gradually combining words to form longer, increasingly complex phrases and sentences.

Children who are Gestalt Language Processors (GLPs) develop language through a different pathway. Rather than starting with individual words, they may initially learn and use longer phrases, sentences or 'chunks' of language that carry a particular meaning for them. This is often referred to as delayed echolalia.

These language chunks may be borrowed from familiar sources such as television programmes, films, books, songs or significant personal experiences. Children might repeat phrases or scripts they have heard, sometimes adopting the accent, intonation or expressive patterns of the original speaker. Their communication can range from clearly recognisable phrases and sentences to longer strings of speech that may be difficult for others to understand.

Over time, children may begin to adapt and combine these familiar scripts, a process known as mitigation. Gradually, they may start to identify and use smaller units of language within these larger chunks, eventually developing their own original words, phrases and sentences.

GLP is a valid way of developing language, and children who learn through this pathway have the potential to develop rich, flexible and meaningful communication. With the right understanding, responsive communication partners and appropriate support.

How can we help?

At The Little Yorkshire Speech Co, we are continuing to develop our specialist knowledge and practice in supporting Gestalt Language Processors and their families.

Although research into Gestalt Language Processing is still evolving, we have seen real results in taking a GLP informed approach to understanding and supporting children's communication.

For many families, learning about GLP can be a real lightbulb moment. Behaviours or communication patterns that may have felt confusing for years can suddenly begin to make sense when viewed through a different lens. Understanding how their child processes and uses language can help families feel more confident, connected and equipped to support their communication.

Our ever evolving GLP pathway focuses on helping families understand their child's unique communication profile and develop practical, responsive strategies that reflect the way their child learns language. By following their child's lead, recognising the meaning behind their language and adapting the way we communicate, we can help create meaningful opportunities for language development.

Ultimately, it's about understanding how your child communicates, meeting them where they are and learning to speak their language.
