Understanding Autism

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental difference that influences how a person experiences the world, processes information and communicates with others.

Autism is described as a spectrum because it presents differently in every individual. There is no single autistic profile, and each child will have their own unique combination of strengths, interests, preferences and support needs. Some children may have differences in how they communicate and interact with others, while others may experience the sensory world, routines, emotions and everyday experiences differently.

Is this the right support for my child?

You might be beginning to explore whether your child could be autistic if you have noticed that they:

  • Communicate or interact with others in ways that seem different from their peers.

  • Find social situations, friendships or understanding social expectations tricky.

  • Have particularly intense interests or enjoy talking about specific topics in great detail.

  • Prefer predictability and familiar routines, or find unexpected changes difficult.

  • Have sensory preferences or sensitivities, such as being particularly sensitive to noise, textures, tastes or busy environments.

  • Enjoy repetitive movements, actions, words or patterns of play.

  • Find it difficult to communicate their feelings, experiences or needs in certain situations.

  • Experience differences in emotional regulation or become overwhelmed by everyday demands.

  • Have a communication style, play style or way of interacting with the world that feels different from other children.

It's important to remember that autism is not something that needs to be fixed or changed. Understanding a child's individual profile can, however, make a huge difference in helping them feel understood, supported and able to navigate the world around them.

At The Little Yorkshire Speech Co, we recognise that communication is about so much more than spoken words. We take a neuro-affirming approach, focusing on understanding each child's individual communication style, recognising their strengths and identifying where additional support or adjustments may be helpful.

We are experienced in supporting families at all stages of this journey. Our aim is to help children and families communicate in ways that feel natural and meaningful to them, while supporting families to better understand their child's needs and create environments in which they can thrive.
