Our Approach

We are proud to offer a genuinely child-led and neuro-affirming approach to therapy with regulation and connection our first priority

Why does regulation matter?

We prioritise regulation and connection before expecting communication or learning to take place. When a child feels overwhelmed, anxious or dysregulated, they may find it much harder to process language, engage with others or communicate their needs. They may be experiencing the world as unsafe or unpredictable, making it difficult to connect with the people around them.

Our first priority is to help your child feel safe, understood and comfortable in our presence. We take time to understand their individual sensory needs, recognise their signs of stress and identify what helps them feel calm and secure. This might involve movement, sensory play, reducing demands, offering space or simply allowing time to build trust at their own pace.

We also support parents to understand their child’s regulation needs and explore practical strategies that can be used in everyday life, at home and in other environments. By supporting regulation and emotional safety, we create the foundations for connection, engagement and communication to develop naturally. We recognise that regulation looks different for every child and focus on understanding what helps your child feel safe, rather than expecting them to appear calm or still. Your therapist will explain this approach in more detail during your first session and work alongside you to identify what best supports your child.

What is child-led therapy?

We will follow your child’s lead, taking time to understand their interests, preferences, sensory needs and individual ways of communicating. We believe children learn best when they feel safe, understood and connected. Rather than placing demands on your child before they are ready, we build communication through play, shared interests and meaningful interactions.

Our approach is child-led and neurodiversity-affirming. We create opportunities for communication without unnecessary pressure to answer questions, repeat words or communicate in a particular way. We recognise that communication can take many forms, including speech, gestures, sounds, signs and AAC, and we value all of these.

We understand this approach may feel different for parents who are more familiar with structured or compliance-based therapy, where children are expected to follow instructions or demonstrate specific skills on demand. Although our sessions may look more like play than traditional therapy, this is where meaningful learning can happen. By following your child’s interests and respecting their boundaries, we aim to build confidence, connection and a genuine motivation to communicate.

In our experience, this approach provides a more meaningful and sustainable foundation for communication than relying on compliance or repeated demands. Our goal is to support skills that are functional and useful in everyday life, not simply skills demonstrated during a session. We are always happy to answer questions, explain our approach and work alongside you to support your child’s communication development.

What is neuro-affirming therapy?

We recognise and celebrate that every child’s brain, communication style and way of experiencing the world is unique. We embrace neurodiversity and understand that there is no single ‘right’ way to think, learn, play or communicate. Rather than trying to make a child communicate or behave in a way that looks “typical”, we focus on understanding and supporting their individual strengths, needs and preferences.

Our therapy is child-led, respectful and responsive to each child’s interests, sensory needs and developmental profile. We create opportunities for communication without pressure, recognising that children are more likely to connect and learn when they feel safe, accepted and understood. We value all forms of communication, whether through speech, gestures, signs, AAC, echolalia, scripts or other individual ways of expressing themselves.

We aim to support children to communicate in ways that feel natural and meaningful to them, while developing confidence, autonomy and meaningful connections with the people around them. We work alongside families to understand their child’s unique communication style and provide practical strategies that can be used in everyday life. Above all, we want every child to feel that their voice matters, their communication is valued and they do not need to change who they are to be understood.
